Guys, when using Aspen to simulate the catalytic distillation column in an MTBE plant, why does methanol end up at the bottom of the column instead of being distilled out along with C4 from the top? Is there something that wasn’t set correctly?
It is mainly methanol that forms an azeotrope with C4!
Control the alcohol-to-olefin ratio carefully to ensure that there is not an excessive amount of methanol in the distillation tower. Additionally, maintain proper control of the temperature at the bottom of the tower, so that methanol can form an azeotrope with butane and thus be vaporized and carried to the top of the tower
