Seeking help regarding distillation column trays

I’m seeking advice from experts: if the liquid phase on the trays inside a distillation column is phase-separated (such as benzene and water), how should the trays be designed to ensure uniform flow of the two phases?
First of all, I can’t design anything, but I know that distillation involves using the different boiling points of mixtures to create a process in which rising gases and flowing liquids mix together within the tower plates, thereby enabling mass and heat transfer.
