Potassium permanganate is used to oxidize and detoxify reducing toxic gases in exhaust gases, under alkaline conditions with a pH of 9–12. The spray towers made of PP material have leaks in multiple places; even a small amount of potassium permanganate that leaks out will cause a large area to turn black when diluted by rainwater. It is unclear whether it is the strong corrosivity or oxidizing power of potassium permanganate that damages the PP welds, or whether there are defects in the welds due to issues in the welding process itself. Repeating repairs using PP welding rods for the leakage points still results in leaks. Is there any solution? If it is to be remade using stainless steel, what material is suitable for use in alkaline potassium permanganate conditions? 1. Potassium permanganate powder will absorb moisture and become clumped if left for too long ; Potassium permanganate powder itself does not absorb moisture, but the small amount of impurities present in it can absorb moisture and form lumps. 2. The solubility of potassium permanganate in water is 6.4 g/100 ml ; 3. Potassium permanganate solution is somewhat corrosive ; 4. Potassium permanganate solution has strong oxidizing properties; its reaction product as an oxidizing agent is manganese oxide, which is one of the components of soil and does not cause environmental pollution ; 5. Potassium permanganate can destroy the carbon-carbon double bonds (C=C) in certain organic compounds, thereby degrading such compounds ; 6. The potassium permanganate solution does not remain stable in the air for long.

Logically, a potassium permanganate solution shouldn’t turn black when exposed to rainwater – is the sulfur content in your exhaust gases quite high? Are these black waters very smelly? As for what material to use to seal the leak, I’m not sure either; I’ll wait for someone more knowledgeable to answer.
