Recently, a methanol manufacturer asked a question: why does the temperature of the insulation layer in the synthesis tower decrease? Inlet temperature to the tower is 192°C, adiabatic layer temperature is 175°C, hotspot temperature is 232°C, and outlet temperature from the tower is 227°C. Pressure 4.9 MPa, gas flow rate into the tower 550,000. The drum pressure is 2.4 MPa.
With such a high tolerance, what could be the reasons for a temperature drop of more than 10°C?
An inaccurate instrument reading is one problem; what other causes could there be?
Referring to other parameters, if only this temperature is changing, it is most likely a problem with the instrument.
Where on the tower is this temperature measurement point installed?
Similar problems have occurred in our plant’s precision desulfurization tower in the past. Through analysis, it was determined that the temperature measurement point was positioned too high; as the unit operated, the catalyst layer sank, and the temperature read by the measurement point no longer reflected the actual temperature of the catalyst bed, but rather the temperature of the space above the catalyst layer. So it’s a bit low.
The temperature measurement point is installed at the upper part of the tube sheet, in the insulating layer area; after the catalyst is heated and reduced, there is no catalyst at this location anymore, only ceramic balls.

The inlet temperature to the tower is 193°C, and the outlet temperature is 229°C. Why is 177°C present inside the tower?
