A distillation column has N1 theoretical plates in the distillation section and N2 theoretical plates in the stripping section. As a result of equipment modifications, the number of theoretical plates in the stripping section increases, while the number of theoretical plates in the distillation section remains unchanged. With F, xf, q, R, V, etc. all remaining constant, how do xw and xd change?
As W decreases while D remains unchanged, it’s clear from a graph that both the q-line and the distillation operation line stay fixed
