Edwards is a renowned high-end British brand of vacuum pumps. Repairing Edwards vacuum pumps is one of the core services provided by Daltong Vacuum. Edwards offers a wide range of products, including oil-sealed rotary pumps, Roots pumps, screw pumps, dry pumps, and claw-type vacuum pumps. Different vacuum pump applications experience different types of failures. In light of the actual circumstances, the head of Dalu Tong Vacuum Technology Department decided to organize a series of training sessions for all employees in the company, focusing on analyzing the faults that occur when maintaining Edwards vacuum pumps in various industrial processes and finding solutions to those issues. The pump type that is trained on first is the EM series oil-sealed rotary pump. Known for its high ultimate vacuum and high pumping speed, low operating noise, and ability to handle steam, it has now become the industry standard for laboratory and light industrial applications. The E1M18 and E2M18 pumps are directly-connected sliding vane pumps. This pump is oil-sealed to ensure reliable long-term operation. This pump is a freely positioned device, with its drive provided by a single-phase or three-phase (four-pole) motor through a movable coupling. These Edwards vacuum pumps are widely used in applications such as food packaging, the metal industry, the petrochemical industry, vacuum heat treatment, vacuum adsorption, pharmaceutical technology, electronics, the semiconductor industry, vacuum plating, and the aerospace industry. Common problems that occur when maintaining Edwards vacuum pumps include a decrease in vacuum level, oil spraying, smoking, oil leakage at the oil seals, noise, as well as emulsification of the vacuum pump oil inside the pump. For different types of faults, we use different solutions: 1. Oil spraying from the vacuum pump: This refers to the situation where a rotary vane vacuum pump emits smoke or oil from its exhaust port while in operation. 2. If the vacuum pump is smoking, it is normal if this occurs right at the start of its operation; however, smoking for an extended period is abnormal. Solution: Smoking indicates that there is something that needs repair outside the pump’s air intake, including the pipes, valves, and containers. After leak detection and repair, the smoking will stop. Vortex flow meter 3: Oil spraying from the vacuum pump indicates that there are numerous leakage points outside the air inlet, or even that the air inlet is exposed to the atmosphere. Solution: Seal the pump’s intake port and run the pump; if no oil is sprayed, there is a leak. The exhaust valve seat may be damaged – check it and replace any damaged exhaust valve seats. 4. Vacuum pump noise: This refers to the noise generated by the pump. Solution: Thumping noise – the pump makes irregular sounds while operating, similar to the sound of metal hitting metal. This is the sound made by the rotor hitting the pump body. This situation is mainly caused by a broken spring between the paired rotors, or by failure of the spring due to contraction or expansion. Solution: Turn on the pump and check whether the rotor spring is damaged. Replaced spring 5: Drop in vacuum level of the vacuum pump: This refers to the situation where the vacuum level of the rotary vane vacuum pump, as measured currently, is lower than the specifications given at the time of manufacture or than the vacuum level it had when used previously. There are many reasons for low vacuum levels; here are some of the main ones. The common faults encountered in the repair of Edwards vacuum pumps are roughly as listed above; this information is based on practical experience, and any similarities are purely coincidental.
