There are two common types of self-priming pumps available on the market: vertical and horizontal (space requirements are not considered here). What are the differences between these two in terms of performance, their respective features, and advantages and disadvantages? I earnestly invite everyone to participate. Thank you.
Vertical self-priming pumps can do without mechanical seals, but they are more difficult to maintain as the motor needs to be lifted. For horizontal pumps, it is sufficient to remove the coupling extension piece in order to service the pump.

In vertical types, there is actually a secondary impeller (power seal) inside, and this secondary impeller consumes a certain amount of power. Compared to the horizontal type, its efficiency is slightly higher. If the medium does not contain any toxic vapors, either of the two can be chosen arbitrarily. If environmental protection needs to be taken into account, then considerations must be given to shaft seals.
As I understand it, in the case of self-priming pumps used for wastewater or sewage tanks, solid debris present in the wastewater may affect the sealing surfaces of the mechanical seal. Vertical self-priming pumps utilize a back impeller, which means they employ a sealless design. Additionally, such pumps allow for water to be stored once and used for an entire lifetime; they also do not have couplings. The self-priming height of vertical self-priming pumps is greater than that of ordinary horizontal pumps, their priming time is relatively shorter, and they require less space. The downside is that they are more difficult to maintain. If it is a self-priming pump used in the process flow, such as one for extraction from the top of a tank, and the material is hazardous and must not leak, then a horizontal self-priming pump designed for use in processes should still be used.
