Issues regarding the start-up of centrifugal pumps

I would like to ask why, when starting a regular centrifugal pump, the knob on the control panel needs to be turned to the “ON” position and held there for two seconds before it can be released What is the purpose of doing this?
Is that how it is? When you turn it to ON, the AC contactor is powered
Ordinary centrifugal pumps don’t seem to require such complicated procedures; only large high-pressure motor systems here might need to be handled in this way
It’s just to make you pause for two seconds; there’s no other meaning to it
