Due to severe wear at the contact surface between the pump shaft and the graphite sleeve, we now want to machine a new shaft; we’re just not sure what material this shaft should be made of. The medium in question is refrigerant. Another question is: does the shaft come into direct contact with the graphite sleeve during operation? Could any expert give some guidance? Thank you

This shaft is slender and difficult to machine; it is not recommended to attempt to handle it oneself. It is advisable to seek help from the manufacturer
Vertical cartridge pump, with sliding bearings at the bottom; there is a liquid film between the normal shaft and the sliding bearings. I don’t know what the level of installation of the pump is.
It is not recommended to carry out the processing yourself; instead, turn to a manufacturer. This shaft is long and thin, requiring high precision in processing. You can use a spectrometric metal analyzer to check the material quality.

To determine the material, a spectrum analysis can be performed to identify the main components; such equipment is generally available in machining factories. The graphite bushing does not come into direct contact with the shaft – a sleeve is used at the fitting point, with a typical clearance of 30–40 microns. The specific values depend on the medium and operating conditions
Our cryopump shaft is made of 316L
If the wear is severe, it is recommended to repair it and then recalibrate the verticality; likely, the wear was caused by poor verticality.

For this type of pump shaft, as far as I know, whether it’s Sulzer or Fox, it’s difficult to repair when it breaks. The original ones are the best; I’ve had some made by Deep Blue, and they seem to last only about a month. Pump shaft damage is largely related to installation and usage. Installation and use are no problem; this type of pump will last for a long time.
