What is a slide valve? A spool valve is a directional control valve that opens, closes, and redirects oil flow by the axial movement of the spool within the valve body; it is the most widely used valve in hydraulic systems. Three or more spool valves can be classified into types such as O, H, Y, C, P, K, N, M, and U depending on their middle-position structure, each with distinct functions. (1) Type O refers to the state in which all oil ports are closed when at the midpoint. At this point, the actuator locks and cannot move; moreover, its chamber is filled with oil. When it is started up or reversed again, it remains in a continuous state, allowing it to move smoothly. (2) Type H refers to a condition where all oil ports are connected at the midpoint. At this point, the actuator stops moving and enters a floating state; it can be moved using a manual crank mechanism. The pressure oil is unloaded to reduce power consumption. However, since A, B, and O are connected, oil is lost in the actuator, and shock can easily occur during startup due to the lack of backflow resistance; therefore, an appropriate backpressure should be applied to the oil return path of the H-type spool, such as by installing a backpressure valve. Furthermore, due to the unloading of the hydraulic pump, attention should be paid to the impact of this unloading on other parts of the system. (3) Type Y means that at the midpoint, oil ports A, B, and O are connected and remain in a floating state, while port P still maintains pressure. Since the hydraulic pump is not unloaded, this has no effect on other parts of the system. The Y-type spool is often used as a pilot valve for hydraulic directional spools. (4) Type J means that at the midpoint, the oil port P maintains pressure, A is closed, while B and O are connected. (5) Type C means that at the midpoint, oil ports P and A are connected, while B and O are closed. (6) P-type means that at the midpoint, the oil ports P, A, and B are connected while O is closed. It is commonly used for differential connections in hydraulic cylinders. (7) Type K means that at the midpoint, the oil ports P, A, and O are connected, while B is closed. (8) Type M refers to the condition where, at the midpoint, the oil ports P and O are connected, while A and B are closed. It is commonly used in circuits for unloading pressure oil when the cylinder or motor stops moving. (9) U-type refers to the condition where, at the midpoint, the oil ports P and O are closed, while A and B are connected. It is generally used in circuits where hydraulic actuators need to float at the stop position. Since the oil in the hydraulic actuator does not flow back to the tank, it continues to provide damping during direction changes and startup, thereby ensuring a smooth transition. (10) A semi-open slide valve means that when certain oil ports are connected, the passage is not fully opened; instead, the oil flows through a relatively narrow, semi-open passage. Like the X-type spool, it has a function similar to that of the H-type spool; however, in its intermediate state, the passages between the various oil ports are relatively narrow, and as a result of throttling, the P port can still maintain a certain pressure. At the same time, since the intermediate position is in a semi-open state and it gradually opens or closes during startup and direction change, it can act as a buffer, preventing pressure shocks associated with direction changes. In addition, the spool valves of other models are also of the semi-open type, such as the YX type and JX type.
