The mechanical seal is cooled using circulating water; it’s a single-face mechanical seal, and the medium being handled is saline wastewater. If this interruption lasts for a day, could it cause any problems?
What medium, temperature, what type of mechanical seal, and what flushing scheme should be specified at least. If the flushing and cooling water for the mechanical seal is cut off, especially under harsh operating conditions, the mechanical seal will fail very quickly
The medium is saline wastewater with a very low salt content; the temperature ranges from 50–60°C. The mechanical seal used is a single-face mechanical seal
As long as the operating conditions for the mechanical seal are not met, damage is inevitable, regardless of how long it’s been in use; if it doesn’t get damaged, that’s pure luck on your part. For reference.
You, as a medium, might be PLAN62; or it could be PLAN11. It’s probably fine if it gets interrupted for a few hours. But it still depends on the structure—there shouldn’t be any major issues with an open sealed chamber
One day is too long; the mechanical seal will fail; A few minutes, maybe ten-odd minutes; there shouldn’t be any problem.
Are you referring to the backside emergency cooling for Plan32 or Plan62? If Plan32 stops operating, there will still be some medium in the pump seal chamber; thus, dry running won’t occur. However, the heat dissipation capability will be somewhat reduced. The seal itself may not necessarily get damaged. In the case of Plan 62, the shutdown has little effect on the seal. Here, quench water is used to wash away the crystals formed from the brine that leaks out of the seal.
If there’s a lack of water for the mechanical seals in our factory, they’ll fail within at most 2 hours.
It all depends on the temperature of the medium inside your pump. If the temperature isn’t high, you might not even need cooling water.
