A diaphragm pump, also known as a control pump, evolved in the 1970s from reciprocating piston pumps by the addition of a diaphragm chamber. It is a new type of conveying mechanism and represents a relatively innovative pump design in China at present. Unlike ordinary pumps, it is the main type of actuator; by receiving control signals from a modulation unit, it uses power to adjust the flow rate of fluids, with common sources of power including air, electric devices, and liquid media. Diaphragm pumps are classified into pneumatic single-diaphragm pumps, electric diaphragm pumps, and pneumatic double-diaphragm pumps. Pneumatic diaphragm pumps can transfer both flowing liquids and some media that are difficult to flow, possessing many advantages of pumping equipment such as self-priming pumps, submersible pumps, canned pumps, slurry pumps, and dirt pumps. This pump has a simple structure, making it easy to install and maintain. The medium transported by the pump does not come into contact with moving components such as the valve train and connecting rods; as a result, its performance does not decline over time due to wear and tear of components like rotors, pistons, gears, or blades, as is the case with other types of pumps. This pump has no rotating components or shaft seals; the diaphragm keeps the medium being pumped completely separated from the pump’s moving parts and the medium in the processing area, preventing any leakage of the transported medium. Therefore, when pumping toxic, volatile, or corrosive media, it does not cause environmental pollution or pose a threat to human safety. It uses compressed air as its power source, and is capable of pumping out all types of corrosive liquids, liquids containing particles, as well as liquids that are highly viscous, volatile, flammable, or highly toxic. It is particularly suitable for use in environments where fire and explosion hazards exist. Using a pneumatic pump is reliable and cost-effective in flammable and explosive environments, as no sparks can be generated once it is grounded ; No heat is generated during operation, so the machine does not overheat ; The fluid will not overheat due to the agitation of the fluid by the diaphragm pump. In the handling of hazardous and corrosive materials, diaphragm pumps can completely isolate the materials from the outside environment. In harsh working environments such as construction sites and industrial facilities, the discharge of wastewater poses a problem; due to the high amount of impurities and complex composition in this wastewater, the pipelines tend to get clogged. This puts excessive strain on electric pumps, causing the motors to overheat and become prone to damage. Pneumatic diaphragm pumps can pass through particles and have adjustable flow rates; they automatically stop when the pipeline is blocked until it becomes unobstructed. It requires no oil lubrication, even when running idle; this has no impact on the pump at all, and this is a notable feature of this pump. Since air is used as the driving force, the flow rate automatically adjusts in response to changes in back pressure (exit resistance), making it suitable for fluids with medium to high viscosity. The operating point of a centrifugal pump is set based on water as a reference; if it is used with fluids that have a higher viscosity, then a reducer or variable frequency drive is required, which increases the cost. The same applies to gear pumps as well. Diaphragm pumps are easy and reliable to operate; starting and stopping them simply requires opening and closing the gas valves. Even if the pump runs without any fluid for an extended period due to some unexpected situation, or if it stops suddenly, it will not get damaged as a result. When overloaded, the pump will shut down automatically, thanks to its self-protection feature, and it will restart once the load returns to normal. It does not need electricity and can also operate when submerged in a medium. In addition, diaphragm pumps are small in size and easy to move; they do not require a foundation, take up very little space, and are simple and economical to install. It can be used as a mobile material transfer pump.
