Api682 specifies six types of structures for modular mechanical seals; then why are there so many different types of mechanical seals available on the market?
The requirements for pumps in the petrochemical industry differ from those for pumps used in other chemical industries. :lol
Most of these seals fall under API682 (except for the unbalanced type)
So, I just don’t get it. Why go through all those fancy tricks?
It is matched according to different working conditions, as well as individual needs – clients who have no budget constraints and can afford anything; with enough money, what solution can’t be provided?
Given varying conditions such as temperature, pressure, and the medium, every aspect related to the materials used for mechanical seals and their accessories, as well as the methods of installation, is the result of accumulated experience and lessons learned over time.

Firstly, API682 does not explicitly state that only 6 sealing configurations exist. But it is clear: 3 sealing series ; 3 types of sealing forms ; 3 layout options ; 3 combination methods, etc. Almost all mechanical seals are covered by this, but these cases represent a categorization of the overall situations involving mechanical seals. Due to the complex conditions at the site, as well as the varying operating conditions of the equipment (including the medium, temperature, pressure, speed of rotation, flushing procedures, and any special requirements from the user), the specific design, dimensions, and materials of mechanical seals also differ. At the same time, mechanical seals are widely used in pumps. There are thousands of pump manufacturers across the country and around the world, and the dimensions of the sealing chambers in the pumps produced by these different manufacturers vary. Due to technical patent protections and differences in technical parameters, the types, sizes, and materials of the mechanical seals used also differ accordingly.
