With careful planning by Sinopec Refining and Chemical and the engineering construction company, as well as close cooperation from Shijian and Qiyun companies, and through the diligent efforts of over 100 workers over 25 days – involving tasks such as installation, anti-corrosion and insulation work, scaffolding setup, and heavy-lift operations – the first large-scale equipment of Sinopec Refining and Chemical’s 800,000 tons per year ethylene steam cracking unit, namely the pre-methanation tower, was successfully lifted into place in a modular format at 18:21 on January 9th. The 4 large towers that arrived at the site of this facility in mid-November last year are scheduled to have their modular construction completed and to be lifted into place in January this year; the pre-demethanization tower will be lifted first. This tower is 66.25 meters tall, has a maximum diameter of 4.4 meters, and weighs 486 tons in total. Following a modular construction plan, Shijian carried out the modular fabrication, assembly, welding, and installation of components such as the ladder support structure for the 11th-floor platform attached to the tower, 500 meters of pipes attached to the tower, 190 cubic meters of foam glass insulation material, 1310 square meters of aluminum alloy panels for protection layers, and 22 sets of electrical lighting fixtures at a height of 1 to 6 meters above the ground. This approach aims to reduce the difficulties and safety risks associated with working at great heights on the tower, improve the quality of construction and work efficiency, and enable Shijian to implement innovative management practices and a modular installation strategy for large towers at Zhongke Refining & Chemical Company. To succeed in this first phase of modular construction, Shijian constructed a double-row scaffolding platform that was 140 meters long and 6 meters high in advance for the tower, and on December 16th, it began installing the structures attached to the tower. On December 25th, work on insulation and the installation of pipes connected to the tower started. With only 16 days left for completion, and given the complexity of the insulation work, Shijian urgently deployed 50 additional workers to assist with the task. After New Year’s Day, over 90 workers worked round the clock to meet the deadline; from January 5th to 7th, they worked continuously until 23:00 for three days in a row. During the final push from January 8th to 9th, taking into account the limited space available for the remaining work, Shijian adopted a shift-based working system where workers kept working while others rested, working through the night to advance the progress and meet the set deadlines. Finally, on January 9th at 17:00, the modular assembly of the tower was completed. The tower was lifted by the shipping company, while the Shijian Company was responsible for its installation. A 1,250-ton crawler crane was used as the main lifting device, with a 650-ton crane assisting in the process. At 17:25 on the 9th, at the command of the lifting supervisor, the operators of the two cranes worked in close coordination to lift the large tower safely and smoothly. The tower was erected by 17:48, and by 18:15 the main crane had lifted it above the foundation. At 18:21, with the help of fitters and crane operators, the tower was successfully placed in position. Fireworks were set off to celebrate the success, and the 22 lighting fixtures on the tower lit up simultaneously, creating a perfect image of a tower that has been erected with its lights shining. The lifting of this large tower marks the beginning of the modular installation of the large towers in the Sinopec Refining and Chemicals project. It will pave the way for the comprehensive adoption of modular construction methods in this project, playing a key role in helping to achieve the project’s strategic goal of using modular construction. Recently, two ethylene plant units – the T402 ethylene distillation tower and the T302 pre-demethanization tower, manufactured by Tianjin Hanyang Equipment Company – were assembled in the Huangtai Industrial Park in Jinan District, where a launching ceremony was held. The two units were loaded onto ships and sent to Guangzhou to support the Sino-foreign joint venture’s integrated refining and chemical project there. Taking on this project marks a new level for Hanyang Equipment Company in terms of manufacturing capacity and project undertaking capabilities. Tianjin Hanyang Metal Equipment Co., Ltd. is located in the Huangtai Industrial Park of Xiaozhan Town. It is a district-level high-tech enterprise dedicated to the research, development, design, and manufacturing of pressure vessels made from stainless steel and special materials. It is also a qualified supplier for various companies such as CNPC and Sinopec. Insulation for tower vessels is not common; it requires the services of specialized insulation contractors, as ordinary insulation companies are not qualified for this task.

The ethylene distillation tower is one of the key and large-scale equipment in steam cracking units; it has a height of 89.51 meters, a diameter of 4.5 meters, and a weight of 602 tons. The diameter of its base skirt is 8.44 meters； The tower was manufactured at Tianjin Hanyang Metal Equipment Factory, loaded onto a ship at Tianjin Port and set off on November 2; it arrived at the Zhongke Refining & Chemicals port terminal on the evening of November after a 9-day journey. Arriving on the same ship as the ethylene tower was also the methane tower, which is 66.25 meters long and weighs 396 tons.
On July 14, the two towers, C-101 and C-301, of the Carbon-8 unit for the China-South Korea (Wuhan) project, which were manufactured by Tianjin Hanyang Metal Equipment Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Tianjin Hanyang), were installed as planned: C-101 was lifted on July 13, and C-301 was lifted on July 14. Through the concerted efforts, close cooperation of all employees on site, and scientific construction methods, the two super-large tower structures for the China-Korea (Wuhan) project were successfully and safely installed.

The marketing department of Tianjin Hanyang overcame the challenges posed by continuous days of thunderstorms and periods of extreme heat, as well as other complex weather conditions. They took preventive measures against rain and moisture, as well as against wind and heat, well in advance. Within just under a month, they completed all the necessary tasks, enabling the site to be ready for lifting operations.
