This marks the successful, high-quality commissioning of China’s first large-scale POE production plant developed through independent research and development. It is reported that Wanhua Chemical began working on patents related to metallocenes, α-olefin oligomerization, and high-temperature solution polymerization of olefins as early as 2017. At the 2018 shareholders’ meeting, Wanhua Chemical first proposed the POE project, and at the 2019 shareholders’ meeting, POE was identified as one of the new chemical materials to be focused on for development in the future ； In December 2019, Wanhua Chemical disclosed the detailed plans for its Wanhua Polyurethane Industry Chain Integration – Ethylene Phase II project, which includes a POE production facility with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons, built using its own technology ； Completed the pilot production of POE products in September 2021 ； In August 2022, the company’s 1.2 million tons per year ethylene and related high-end polyolefin project was approved, which includes 2 × 200,000 tons per year polyolefin elastomer (POE) production units. In December 2023, Wanhua Chemical’s official website published a draft of the environmental impact assessment report for the project; the company plans to build a new POE production facility with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons in the Wanhua Penglai Industrial Park, along with associated auxiliary facilities and supporting infrastructure. On March 29 of this year, Wanhua Chemical stated on the investor interaction platform that the company’s first-phase POE production facility with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons is expected to come online in the first half of 2024. The second-phase project at the Penglai site, with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, has already begun construction and is expected to be completed and put into operation by the end of 2025. Once completed, the company’s total POE production capacity will reach 600,000 tons per year. As a high-end polyolefin material, POE features high technical barriers and unique performance advantages, enabling its wide use in various fields such as photovoltaics, modification, healthcare, and packaging. With the rapid development of new energy sources, POE materials hold great prospects for application in the field of energy storage. In the automotive industry, weight reduction has become an industry trend. Currently, one of the key ways to reduce the weight of vehicle bodies is by using lightweight and efficient composite material components. Wanhua Chemical’s WANSUPER POE material has a low density, excellent weather resistance, and good compatibility with polypropylene (PP) materials. The blend modified materials with PP can be widely used in various automotive components, such as bumpers, airbag modules, and sound insulation pads. With the continuous increase in the penetration rate of new energy vehicles and the ongoing growth in demand from the automotive manufacturing industry, demand for POE is set to grow even faster. In addition, POE products can also be used for foaming in shoe materials, offering consumers a lightweight and comfortable experience thanks to their excellent resilience and low density. In the cable industry, POE can be used as a toughening agent in the production of wires and cables, hot melt adhesives, and cable insulation materials. At the same time, Wanhua is also further developing the applications of POE in more fields such as healthcare, specialty emulsions, and packaging. With the commissioning of new projects in the domestic market, the supply in the POE industry will increase significantly, leading to more intense competition.
