EPC work begins on the 3 units of Sinopec Henan Refining & Chemical’s million-ton ethylene project

According to Sinopec Henan Refining & Chemical Company, with a focus on downstream processing and energy supply, the EPC work for the three units of the company’s million-ton ethylene project has commenced, marking further substantial progress in the construction of this project. Among them, the plant with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons of ethylene oxide along with the carbon dioxide purification unit, and the plant with an annual production capacity of 350,000 tons of high-density polyethylene are to be constructed by Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Company. As the second set of industrial facilities in China to apply the refined ethylene oxide production technology independently developed by Sinopec, the plant with an annual production capacity of 200,000 tons of ethylene oxide boasts technical and economic indicators such as material and energy consumption that are among the best in the country, with its overall performance reaching world-leading levels. The carbon dioxide capture and purification unit it incorporates is capable of using the high-concentration carbon dioxide waste gas emitted by the device as raw material; through purification, it produces food-grade carbon dioxide that can be used in areas such as carbonated beverages, food preservation, and food processing. This helps to reduce carbon emissions further and supports the sustainable, low-carbon development of enterprises. The plant with an annual production capacity of 350,000 tons of high-density polyethylene utilizes a breakthrough technology that employs pentane as a solvent to convert gaseous ethylene into solid plastic products, thereby enabling direct connection to the large end-market. Together with plants for producing ethylene oxide and similar substances, it forms the \"key engine\" for downstream processing in this project. From September 2 to 3, the kick-off meeting for the EPC general contract of projects such as the cogeneration unit for Luoyang’s million-ton ethylene project was held at Ningbo Engineering Company. The meeting held in-depth discussions on project implementation planning, enforcement of management regulations, design optimization solutions, procurement strategies, and construction organization, and reached a consensus on these matters. Ningbo Engineering Company is responsible for the EPC general contracting of this facility. By providing stable and reliable power and steam to the entire facility simultaneously, this device significantly improves energy efficiency, while ensuring production stability and economic benefits. The commencement of work this time marks the entry of all 3 units into the phase of implementing the project strategy, which is of great significance for ensuring the smooth progress of subsequent tasks. Together with the ethylene plant with an annual production capacity of 1 million tons and the pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation plant with an annual capacity of 600,000 tons that were already put into operation, five EPC projects for Henan Refining and Chemical’s million-ton ethylene project are now in progress. In accordance with the overall plan, the million-ton ethylene project is currently advancing in an orderly manner with the construction of site roads and the plant’s water supply and drainage networks (including fire protection systems). At the same time, work is underway on the design and procurement of the ethylene unit, the pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation unit, the ethylene oxide unit, the high-density polyethylene unit, and the cogeneration unit. Efforts are being made to start pile driving operations in areas that meet the requirements by the end of the year. Construction Content: Based on the raw materials provided by the Luoyang Petrochemical refinery, this project will include 13 petrochemical production units, with a 1 million-ton/year ethylene plant as the core. These units include a 150,000-ton/year butadiene extraction plant, a 600,000-ton/year pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation plant, a 400,000-ton/year aromatic extraction plant, a 30,000-ton/year styrene extraction plant, a 300,000-ton/year metallocene linear low-density polyethylene plant, a 350,000-ton/year high-density polyethylene plant, a 250,000-ton/year low-density polyethylene/ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (LDPE/EVA) plant, a 100,000-ton/year EVA plant, a 200,000-ton/year ethylene oxide plant, a 400,000-ton/year No. 3 polypropylene plant, and a 200,000-ton/year No. 4 polypropylene plant. Pile foundation construction for this project began in March 2025; it is currently in the phase of ground pre-treatment and pile testing. The project is now ready for civil engineering work to commence, with full construction scheduled to start in October 2025. In accordance with the overall plan, the refinery supporting facilities for the ethylene project are scheduled to receive power at the substation in September 2026, mechanical construction to be completed by December 2026, and the facility to be ready for commissioning trials in April 2027.
