Spacing of longitudinal girth welds on the cylinder

The spacing between the longitudinal ring welds of the cylinder is required to be no less than 100 mm, and not less than 3 times the thickness of the plate. How were such requirements determined? Is it acceptable if the weld of the gasket plate (structural member) on the cylinder is less than 100 mm away from the longitudinal seam of the cylinder?

Is it true that when welds are too close to each other, the overlapping areas in the heat-affected zone undergo repeated heating treatments, which can lead to material degradation and defects in the welds? As for the welds on the gussets, since it’s a localized area, 100 mm should be sufficient. The weld itself is the weak point of the container, including both the weld and the heat-affected zone. If the two seams form a cross or are close to each other, the intersection point becomes an even weaker point. Therefore, standards are established to avoid the effects caused by overlapping welds.
