I spent four hours working on the ABB positioner today. No error messages appeared during the self-tuning process. When the display reached 40, the valve stem moved upward very slowly; moreover, it returned to 40 before reaching 100, after which the valve stem started moving upward again. This repeated itself numerous times, and it wasn’t possible to complete the tuning even after 10 minutes. What could be the reason?

Last night, a new locator was installed. Due to the operation of the unit, full calibration was not used; instead, travel calibration was applied. The parameters of the original locator were simply set on the new locator – it might be worth giving it a try. P1.0 LINEAR, P1.2 FULL→STROKE, P2.3 DIRECT, P2.4 SHUT-CLS 5.0, P3.2 CTCLOCK, P8.2 DIRECT. P7.0 KP=2.0, P7.1 KP=4.0, P7.2 TV=145, P7.3 TV=58.

After the tuning is complete, save and exit, switch to remote control; operations in the control room proceed normally. In fact, there are various types of self-tuning methods available, and manual tuning can also be used, as long as the system’s operational requirements are met.
How can I detect an clogged amplifier, and how do I deal with it?
If the amplifier is clogged, clean the oil and water from the air supply first; after re-supplying air, tap on the locator to remove the blockage. If the clogging is severe, replace the locator.
