For pumps, the technical requirement is that the shaft seal (mechanical seal) must be able to withstand temperatures up to 120°C. Is this temperature clearly specified in the data provided by the seal manufacturers? Will post-installation measures such as flushing have an impact on this value after it is installed on the pump?

The two functions of the seal water are to provide sealing and to cool the mechanical seal. The rubber ring mentioned above is likely the O-ring located between the rotating and stationary rings in the mechanical seal. Both the flow rate and temperature of the seal water can affect the temperature of the mechanical seal. Furthermore, excessively high water temperatures can easily cause the water film formed by the sealing water to vaporize, resulting in a poor sealing effect; at the same time, it can lead to wear of the sealing surfaces between the stationary and rotating rings. Here, we have encountered situations where self-sealing mechanical seals leaked due to poor heat exchange; when the seals were disassembled during overhauls, many pits and irregularities could be seen on their surfaces. After communicating with the pump manufacturer, we switched to using external supply of seal water.
It is also related to the material conveyed by the pump.
