The driver’s conscience

To get straight to the point, this morning at the intersection where I ride my bike, I saw a puppy dead by the side of the road. Judging by the appearance, it wasn’t crushed; it must have been hit. I think it was hit by some unlicensed vehicles this morning. Since the puppy is very small, the private drivers are relatively courteous, and there is a gathering area of unlicensed taxis quite close to the place where the incident occurred. In Shanghai, unlicensed taxis are rampant, ignoring red lights and racing against time. Every day I have to pass by two areas where unlicensed taxis gather, being careful each time. I once watched a video in which a puppy died, and another puppy stayed by its side; it was really amazing and extremely touching. Today, I saw that puppy surrounded by three other dogs, sniffing around; it seemed not to realize that its playmate was dead, with its tail wagging nonstop. But it also seems that these puppies are very restless, moving continuously. Every day, whether it’s people or dogs, they are silently killed on the road while the driver drives away. In this big city, if someone suddenly dies, it’s likely to be a very sad and desolate situation. The first ones to arrive are either the police or onlookers, reflecting on how life is unpredictable and how difficult it is to cherish one’s family and friends. We are living well, but not that happy.
