A pilot-scale system uses oil for heat transfer, with temperatures ranging from 100 to 300°C. The designed system is relatively simple; the circulation tank is covered by a lid that can be removed, and the seal is not tight, so the oil is essentially in contact with air. Given the strong, pungent odor of commonly used heat transfer oils, we have been using methyl silicone oil. After being in use for a period of time, the silicone oil deteriorates, gels, its viscosity increases significantly, and it loses its fluidity, requiring replacement. Is there any kind of hot oil that has a high flash point for safety, low viscosity for easy flow, resistance to high temperatures to prevent degradation, and a mild odor?
Heat transfer oil is also prone to oxidation, especially under high-temperature conditions. It is highly recommended to apply nitrogen sealing protection to the circulation tank. At 100°C, the viscosity of most heat transfer oils should be relatively low, similar to that of water. If brand is a consideration, Therminol heat transfer oil could be an option; it is claimed to require no replacement for up to 10 years.
