The flare line connected to the safety valve at the top of the Texaco scrubber is fed with low-pressure nitrogen, and this setup is used to maintain a slight positive pressure in the flare system Or prevent ash from entering the pipeline and reaching the scrubber tower through the safety valve (countercurrent)?
Many design institutes design things this way these days. First, after the safety valve activates, the gas is vented to the flare; such systems usually come equipped with a battery-operated valve. Another purpose is to dilute the concentration of flammable gases. I work in the petrochemical industry!
There’s no need to keep it on all the time, as that would waste nitrogen. This pipeline is used to replace the pipeline behind the safety valve while the system is in operation, thereby preventing explosions from occurring there after the safety valve activates.
