What type of valve does a manual dual-active knot connection valve refer to?

Does a manually operated dual-active knot connection valve refer to what is commonly called a on/off valve? For things like ball valves and butterfly valves, why are double union connections used? Does that mean they are connected using two fittings?
A dual-active joint generally refers to a connection using clamps. It can be easily replaced
For double-check valve connections, I’m only aware of PPR double-check ball valves, as well as PVC-based all-plastic double-check ball valves
