A heat exchanger is a device that transfers part of the heat from a hot fluid to a cold fluid, also known as a heat transfer unit. Plate heat exchangers are common equipment in various industrial sectors such as chemicals, petroleum, steel, automotive, food, and many others, and they play an important role in production. Especially in chemical production, heat exchangers are widely used as heaters, coolers, condensers, evaporators, and reboilers. In recent years, with the rapid development of industries such as petrochemicals and steel in our country, the demand for heat exchangers has increased significantly. However, the supply capacity of domestic enterprises is limited, resulting in a situation where the demand for heat exchangers exceeds supply; this large gap in supply must be filled through imports. According to customs statistics, from 2001 to 2005, China imported an average of 224,900 heat exchangers per year from abroad, with a total value of 1.402 billion US dollars. Of these, 341,100 units were imported in 2004 alone, amounting to a total of $490 million. Although China also exports a considerable number of heat exchangers, their scale is far smaller than that of imports (see Figure 1). In 2001, the import volume, value, and average price of heat exchangers in our country were 44,640 units higher, 80.216 million US dollars higher, and 245.72 US dollars per unit higher respectively than the export volume, value, and average price ; By 2005, the gap between imports and exports had widened to 75,667 units, $34,517 million, and $1,347.57 per unit. This shows that the growth rate of China’s heat exchanger market far exceeds the growth rate of supply. At the same time, the average price of heat exchangers exported by our country is less than half of the average import price, and in 2005 it dropped below 25%. It is conceivable that the products exported by our country are mostly mid- to low-end products with low added value, while the imported products are mostly high-end products with high added value. This fully illustrates the current market situation in our country, where there is a strong demand for high-end heat exchanger products yet an insufficient supply. It is expected that during the 11th Five-Year Plan period, China’s import volume of heat exchangers will remain at a relatively high level (around 2 to 3 million units), with an increasing focus on high-end products. According to the Outline of the 11th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China, China’s economic growth will maintain an average annual rate of 7.5% during the 11th Five-Year period. As pillar industries, the petrochemical and steel sectors will continue to show rapid growth; it is expected that by 2010, the total output value of the steel industry will exceed 500 billion yuan, while that of the chemical industry will surpass 400 billion yuan. The development of these industries will all provide a broader scope for growth for the heat exchanger industry. In the future, domestic market demand will exhibit the following characteristics: there will be higher requirements regarding product quality, with environmentally friendly and energy-efficient products being the focus of future development ; Demand an improvement in the cost-performance ratio of the product ; The demand for personalized and diversified products is strong ; Gradually pay attention to the selection of branded products ; Large-scale engineering projects prefer products from large enterprises or corporate groups. The favorable opportunities brought about by domestic economic development, along with the high potential for transforming imported products, all indicate a bright future for China’s heat exchanger industry. At the same time, industry development must focus on the research and development of high-end products.
