Hello, experts. My unit is a diesel hydrocracking unit that came online in 2006. The heating furnace tubes at the inlet of the reaction reactor extend from the bottom upwards; before entering the heating furnace, these tubes split into two branches. One of these branches’ thermocouples showed signs of leakage and severe wear in October 2015. After replacing it with a new thermocouple, the unit has been operating successfully ever since. Today, taking advantage of the opportunity to shut down the unit, I inspected this thermocouple and found that the newly installed one was also showing signs of wear, with the degree of wear being similar to that of the original faulty thermocouple. The most severely worn area is located facing the direction of the flow of the medium. The material of the thermocouple is 316L. Could everyone please help analyze the reasons for the wear of the thermocouples? Thank you!
Generally, it’s due to substandard materials; we too have encountered situations where we were overworked. The properties of the raw materials and the amount of feed used are all within the designated range.
Wear and corrosion are normal phenomena. I consulted the design institute and the manufacturer, and their response was that when one or two maintenance cycles have passed and there is no more corrosion margin left, it’s time to replace it!
What is the temperature? It determines whether a tetrafluoropolymer coating can be applied, as it has good thermal conductivity.
It will definitely wear out; try using a material of a higher quality. If wear is severe, consider using some other more durable material

I am very grateful for everyone’s responses and attention. The cause has now been identified: an object was found inside upon inspection using a scope, and it is suspected that this is the source of the problem. We will cut open the pipeline in the near future to remove that object and determine what it is!
