Life Section: My Views on Proverbs – Part 2. Throughout the course of a person’s life, due to differences in age, personality, status, upbringing, and experience, different interpretations of a particular statement or event can arise. And sometimes, when we are feeling depressed or disheartened, we often hear a phrase inadvertently, which can have an impact on our lives; in some cases, certain words can even affect a person’s entire life. So, dear sailors, let’s share our own perspectives on our understanding of some famous quotes and sayings. I hope this series of posts can provide some hints and a bit of encouragement for those who, like me, are struggling in confusion and fighting their way through difficulties. “To understand tolerance and simplicity, may all things go well.” This was a phrase given to me by Brother Pingsha during a casual conversation; tolerance means acceptance and being accommodating. Easy to change, courage. The lesson that Brother Pingsha imparted to me through this whole sentence is this: have the magnanimity to accept things that cannot be changed, the courage to change those that can be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish between the two. At first, I thought this statement was very profound, but gradually I came to understand its meaning and implications in a much more concrete and tangible way. So, friends, what is your understanding of this sentence?
If Buddhist principles can be put into practice and followed as taught, one can let things unfold as they should. Once all defilements are eradicated and the cycle of birth and death comes to an end, not only will everything go as one wishes, but everything will indeed be perfect!
