Can stainless steel storage tanks be used as tanks for preparing ALCL3? The tank I used for preparing ALCL3 in my flue gas desulfurization system started leaking after a short time of use. Could this be due to an inappropriate choice of material?
This really isn’t possible, as chloride ions are present. Aluminum chloride contains free chloride ions, and its aqueous solution already contains chloride ions, which can cause corrosion to ordinary stainless steel. Plastic can be used. Or a better stainless steel material can be used, but the cost is higher.
Ordinary stainless steel cannot withstand high concentrations of chloride ions

The material of my storage tank is 304; is 316L acceptable?
316 is better than 304, but it still won’t work in the long run. Ordinary stainless steel is sensitive to chlorine.
That type of stainless steel has good resistance to chloride ions. So, what kind of material should be used for storage tanks like ours?
