Siemens’ 4-stage air compressor has 3 stages that are of semi-open type with an outlet angle of 65°, while the other stage is of closed type with an outlet angle of 50°. How can one determine which stage is the closed type? What is the purpose of such a design? @siemens001

I agree with you, but why was it designed this way? What are the differences in the functions of open, semi-open, and closed types?
Semi-open impellers have a high flow rate, but their efficiency is lower than that of closed impellers; moreover, their leakage rate is also higher. As for the claim that the first three stages are all semi-open types, I’ve never seen that before. Could it be that you need a high flow rate but not necessarily very high pressure? Our unit is of the type with one and a half stages open and three stages closed. As you mentioned, the flow rate is 480 T/H and the pressure is 11 Barg. Does a high leakage rate mean low efficiency, or a low compression ratio? There are also a few other units, all of which have level 5 systems that are open-type; they have higher pressure and slightly lower flow rates. Could you provide the model of your MAN engine?
What does a flow rate of 480 T/H mean? Weren’t you talking about a compressor? It seems like it’s talking about pumps

You’re referring to mass flow rate; I’ve done the calculations and our flow rate is more or less the same. Usually we talk about volume flow rate, which is 357870 Nm3/h

A semi-open impeller is efficient at low pressure and high volumetric flow rates. When the pressure reaches a certain level, it is no longer applicable.
