When the ratio of light key components in the feed mixture is lower than normal during operation, the position of the feed plate should be moved downward. How should this sentence be understood? This increases the number of trays in the distillation section, and the light component feed is less than in normal operations. Is that many tray numbers really necessary in the distillation section? I don’t know where I didn’t understand it.
The optimal feeding position is one where the product composition on that feed tray matches that of the feed, and the temperature is equal to the feed temperature; in other words, the stable operation of the distillation column is not disturbed by the feed. As the light components in the feed decrease and the heavy components increase, the higher the proportion of heavy components inside the tower, the lower the liquid level will be; therefore, it is necessary to move the feed inlet downward.
The function of the distillation section is to remove the heavier components. When the amount of light components in the feed decreases, the concentration of heavier components increases, which leads to an increased load on the distillation section. In such cases, the feed inlet is moved downward to increase the number of trays in the distillation section, thereby achieving the desired separation effect.
I still don’t quite understand; with more light components, the distillation section should become shorter, right?

Yes, it says that there’s an excess of heavy components, so the distillation step needs to be enhanced. If there are too many light components, then increase the lifting portion.
With fewer light components, in other words, there are more heavy components! Adding a distillation section is to prevent the heavier components from moving upward.
