I used to think that the tube side of a U-tube heat exchanger wasn’t suitable for circulating cooling water, but today I heard that it’s fine to use such water. Now I’m confused. If this method is used, how can the scale accumulated in the bends be removed? Thank you. I would also appreciate any advice from those who work in the field of heat exchanger cleaning
Cooling water can be used; if the tubes on the outer side become fouled, they can be replaced. If it’s no longer possible to continue using them, then the entire tube bundle has to be replaced. . . In a syngas compressor, the inter-stage water cooler features cooling water flowing in the tube side, while the process gas flows in the shell side. .

Scale forms at the bends, but as long as it does not affect the flow of water, it’s fine; after all, it is a heat exchanger, and heat exchange is not taken into account at the bends. If it affects circulation, chemical cleaning or manual cleaning could be considered; for specific advice, it’s best to consult a professional. We mainly rely on feedback from the site.
The key is to improve the management level of circulating water quality, by adding chemicals to prevent scaling in the circulating water or even to avoid scaling altogether, as well as conducting regular system cleaning – this is the fundamental solution. If there is scale, not to mention curved pipes, even straight pipes will be enough to clear it!
