Many solvent regeneration systems equipped with activated carbon filters face the issue of knowing when it is time to replace the activated carbon with new one Should it be replaced during device maintenance? Activated carbon filters really don’t work well; they get clogged easily, and it’s troublesome to deal with those clogs. Moreover, the area is filled with an amine odor. Most activated carbon filters have been shut down, and they have been replaced with automatic backwash filters, along with the addition of amine treatment systems.
This problem is very troublesome. Activated carbon is not effective; it gets clogged frequently due to an excessive amount of charred coke powder, and backwashing can be used to address this issue. However, an excessive amount of coke powder in the rich liquid can easily cause blockages in the trays of the regeneration tower, as well as blockages in the sensing probes of the remote monitoring instruments, and blockages in the pressure gauge of the reflux tank. Repairing clogged instruments in the regeneration tower and reflux tank is too dangerous; it is recommended to carry a respirator when carrying out the repairs.
Our practice is to replace it once a year. In the past, it was determined whether regeneration or replacement was necessary based on pressure drop, but now regeneration is generally not performed; instead, replacement is carried out directly.

It is mainly determined based on the quality of the amine solution; if the activated carbon is not replaced over time, problems such as foaming may occur in the amine solution.
