Standard answer: At that time, materials were scarce in the countryside, yet there was so much tin there. What children can find most easily is a fuse, which is a tin-lead alloy. The melting point of the fuse is only a little over 100 degrees. Lead is highly toxic; how could the children in the rural areas back then understand such things?
