Why does the standard equipment flange fail the SW6 verification? Could some experienced member explain this? Thank you
That’s right; the safety factor used before is different from the one used now, and standard flanges have always followed the previous dimensions. It’s not just flanges; many components fail to meet the requirements when evaluated using new or other calculation methods. In particular, as more and more conservative calculation methods are adopted, things actually end up falling behind. Since no problems have arisen over the years from using the traditional methods, there’s no need to overemphasize theoretical considerations. After all, theory is just that – theory, and it often differs greatly from reality. Why go out of our way to make things even more outdated? It’s unclear whether those who develop standards are experts or amateurs.
I think standard parts have been tested through extensive engineering practice, so a small margin is used in the calculations, which makes it difficult for those calculations to be successful. Those that have not undergone extensive testing cannot guarantee safety; a larger margin is assigned, meaning that the values obtained through calculation are more conservative.
