How to determine whether welding is done manually or with gas shielding based on the shape of the weld seam
Generally, root cleaning is required for manual or automatic welding grooves; when root cleaning is not necessary, a root pass is used (although electrode-based root passing is also an option) in gas shielded welding. In most cases, it’s necessary to consider the specific circumstances.

Our factory also uses gas shielded welding for the root pass followed by cleaning
Is root cleaning required for TIG welding as a backing pass? This is also gas shielded welding. Haven’t seen it.
Look at the appearance of the weld: in manual welding, the electrode is shorter and there are pauses in the welding process, while in MIG welding it’s generally possible to weld all the way to the end. The pattern from manual welding is coarser, while that from MIG welding is more uniform

The weld bead produced by manual welding is relatively wide, and the weld metal is layered and overlapping, usually appearing wavy with a rough surface. Gas shielded welding produces weld beads that are narrow and have a relatively smooth surface.
With manual welding, the welds are generally larger, and there are obvious undulating patterns on their surface. With gas shielded welding, the welds are smaller in size
