When working on my doctoral thesis, I had to determine the kinetics of urease-catalyzed urea hydrolysis, but under conditions with no impurities other than the reactants and products. Why is this requirement? This is because it is used to treat wastewater from urea plants, and such wastewater contains urea, ammonia, and carbon dioxide; of course, the pH of the solution varies depending on the concentrations or ratios of ammonia and carbon dioxide. I am going to study the hydrolysis kinetics of urea in such a self-buffering solution, and express it as a function of pH value. The laboratory is very advanced, equipped with a wide range of chemicals, gas cylinders, instruments, and facilities, including 4 acid-base titration/control units (each costing over $40,000 in 1992). I truly managed to determine the reaction kinetics under the existing experimental conditions, with no impurities other than the reactants and products, and this was done at different pH values. How did I do it?
