Leaving 20 centimeters from the bottom of the tank is intended to prevent impurities present in the material, as well as rust, paint, slag and other contaminants from the tank itself, from being drawn into the pump and damaging the impeller. Normal operation does not require such a high level of cleanliness; only during shutdowns or maintenance tasks should water be filled to a level of over 30 centimeters first, after which the material can be pumped. Once the tank level drops by 30 centimeters, the pump should be stopped, and the water should then be drained through the drainage outlet at the bottom of the tank. Of course, it depends on the specific material. We have oil tanks here, so water can be used as a cushion.
