Graphite heat exchangers are used in situations with severe corrosion where metal heat exchangers cannot be used. Due to the fragile nature of graphite (even when reinforced materials are used), maintenance poses considerable difficulties. An accident can result in the need to replace the entire graphite module. Abroad, there is an increasing trend toward using heat exchangers with substitute coatings. For example, tantalum can withstand high temperatures and corrosion, but its cost is extremely high; therefore, some companies now use heat exchangers with a tantalum coating. This solves both the corrosion problem and the issue of high costs.
