I would like to understand the question posed: if there is no external insulation, what are the reasons for that? Thank you!

The Shell gasifier has insulation on its surface, while the Texaco model lacks such insulation because surface thermocouples are used to monitor the wall temperature of the furnace. In Shell’s case, the use of water-cooled walls to transfer heat means that these walls absorb a portion of the reaction heat generated in the gasifier. The temperature of the gasifier’s walls is not monitored in every area like it is with Texaco; only a few representative points are used as references. It is necessary to provide insulation protection for the outer walls of the gasifier, and this also serves as a measure to protect personnel. Since Texaco’s durable refractory bricks are of the regenerative type, they should logically also require insulation. However, because remote thermocouples are often not very accurate, it is necessary to use temperature guns on-site for actual measurements in order to monitor the wear of the refractory bricks; as a result, there is no insulation layer on the surface of the gasification furnace.
