Our plant currently has a hydrogen extraction unit capable of processing 1,050 cubic meters per hour of coke oven gas – this gas contains 55% hydrogen, various impurities, and operates at a pressure of 10 KPa. With the new LNG project now in operation, large amounts of hydrogen-rich gas are available; this gas contains over 90% hydrogen, with the remainder being methane and CO, and it is sulfur-free, operating at a pressure of 10 kilograms. The company’s management wants to use this hydrogen-rich gas directly as the feedstock for the hydrogen extraction unit. Additionally, in the event of a malfunction in the LNG section, it is possible to switch back to using coke oven gas without affecting the subsequent hydrogenation processes. Is this idea feasible? What impacts will it have on the existing equipment, such as the adsorbents and compressors? If it is feasible, please suggest some modifications that could be made. Thank you! ! ! :P
Personally, I think there’s no problem, but it’s necessary to ensure that the hydrogen-rich gas composition remains stable; it’s best to conduct a thorough analysis to determine the components and their concentrations, in order to avoid the presence of heavy hydrocarbons or similar substances. It’s also advisable to consult the PSA equipment manufacturer to find out whether the performance of its adsorbents is sufficient. Lastly, it needs to be determined whether the pressure of the gas supply should be reduced or increased~~

According to the data analysis by the poster, coke oven gas should be pre-treated and purified before being fed into a compressor for pressurization, followed by PSA for hydrogen extraction. What is the pressure in kilograms? If it’s only a few kilograms, then the hydrogen-rich gas produced from LNG can be utilized. Hydrogen-rich gas contains fewer impurities; for the adsorbents used previously, specific filling data were required for analysis, but it should be possible to meet the requirements.
