This year's confusion

I have been working on instrument design in a small design firm for two years; there isn’t much work, and it mainly involves wiring tasks. It feels like working for a year and then taking a year off. I’ve been looking for a job for over half a year without finding one that’s suitable. It seems that even if the industry is booming, it’s still necessary to gain some experience through work over these two years in order to ensure good prospects for the future. What should I do? I’m thinking about changing careers. Seeking advice.
