This post was last edited by Laborer 1985 on 2016-3-10 08:04. Local refineries generally blend oils to produce gasoline with an appropriate octane rating. MTBE is sometimes used as a blending agent. Given the environmental hazards, the United States no longer uses MTBE. So, is the gasoline produced there now compliant with standards without the need for octane boosters, or are other additives used instead? Is oil from Sinopec and CNPC also blended in this way?

MTBE is banned only in a few states; in other states, it can be used as a component in gasoline. The blending of octane number does not necessarily require MTBE; other high-octane components such as alkylated oils, reformed oils, and isomerized oils can also be used. The use of MTBE as a blending component is permitted in many cases and is even encouraged, as the process allows for the utilization of some light hydrocarbons as well as methanol, which has low value.
Is there a market demand for TAME as an octane booster?
