Do underground oil storage tanks (for light crude oil) fall under the category of pressure vessels? Is it necessary to install a safety valve?
Underground oil tanks (for light crude oil) are considered pressure vessels; is it generally necessary to install safety valves?
Just by looking at this, it’s possible to figure out what might happen. The underground tanks we’re about to install (for use during shutdowns) are required to be designed for a pressure of 0.6 MPa, but no safety valves have been installed in them.
Personally, I think it should belong to the category of safety valves; I’m not sure whether a flame arrester or an overflow pipe is needed as well

The underground oil tank (for light oil) is supplied with nitrogen, and some of the light oil may also contain a small amount of LPG. The design pressure specified by the equipment manufacturer for this tank is 0.35 MPa, whereas the pressure in the nitrogen supply system is 0.6 MPa; therefore, there is a possibility of overpressure. I’m not sure if a safety valve is necessary
Is a nitrogen seal in place? Does light contaminated oil contain LPG?
When we build an oil spill tank, it is considered a Class II pressure vessel. Anyway, there is no device safety valve port on the equipment, but it’s not certain whether there is one on the pipes. This question should be asked to the process team; they will likely provide a more professional answer
The safety valve setting for the underground oil tank in our facility is 0.9 MPa, and the tank is entirely buried underground, with only a manhole visible.
