For riveted boilers, it is only the boiler’s shell that needs to be riveted; this has nothing to do with the boiler’s pressure. Riveting is used in construction, boiler manufacturing, railway bridges, and metal structures, among other fields. The main advantages of riveting are: simple process, reliable connection, vibration resistance, and impact resistance. Compared to welding, its disadvantages are: a bulky structure, rivet holes that reduce the cross-sectional strength of the joined components by 15%–20%, and lower economy and tightness in riveting compared to welding. Compared to bolted connections, riveting is more economical and results in less weight. However, with the development of welding and high-strength bolted connections, the use of riveting has gradually declined. It is still employed in metal structures subjected to severe impact or intense vibration loads, or in situations where welding techniques are limited, such as in crane frames, railway bridges, shipbuilding, and heavy machinery. Nevertheless, riveting remains the primary method used in aviation and aerospace vehicles. Furthermore, rivet connections are sometimes also used for joining non-metallic components (such as the connection between the friction pads and the brake shoes or bands in brakes).
