Sun Wukong has four names: 1. The \"Beautiful Monkey King\" proclaimed by the monkeys of Flower-Fruit Mountain. The Stone Monkey discovered Water Curtain Cave for the monkeys on Flower-Fruit Mountain. As agreed in advance, they all called him the Thousand-Year King. From then on, the Stone Monkey ascended to the throne; he hid the character \"stone\" from his name and became known as the Beautiful Monkey King. 2. The Patriarch Bodhi bestowed the Dharma name “Sun Wukong”. The Monkey King went to the Cave of Three Stars under the Slanting Moon on Mount Lingtai Fangcun, and became a disciple of Patriarch Bodhi in order to learn the art of eternal life. When the Patriarch heard from the Beautiful Monkey King that he had no surname nor parents, and was a monkey born throughout the entire world, he asked him to stand up and walk around. The Monkey King leaped up and walked in circles twice. The master laughed and said, “Your body is ugly, like that of a monkey that eats pine nuts.” I will take a surname for you; I will have you use the surname “Xu”. If we remove the animal radical from the character Xu, what remains is Gu Yue. In ancient times, it meant old ； The moon represents yin. Since the old demon cannot bring about fertility, it’s better to teach you the surname Xun. Remove the beast radical ( 犭 ) from the character, and it becomes a surname. A son is a male child ； The term refers to something small and delicate. Compiling the fundamental treatise on infants. \"Let me teach you your surname – Sun.\" After the Monkey King received the surname Sun, the master said, \"In our family, there are twelve generational terms: Guang, Da, Zhi, Hui, Zhen, Ru, Xing, Hai, Ying, Wu, Yuan, and Jue. When it came to the Monkey King’s turn, the term was ‘Wu’, so I gave him the Dharma name ‘Sun Wukong’.\" 3. The Jade Emperor conferred an honorary title upon him – “The Great Sage Equal to Heaven”. Dong Zhuo, the Monkey King, was dissatisfied with the position of Beima Wen, which the Jade Emperor had assigned to him as supervisor of imperial horses. He left the South Heavenly Gate and returned to the Water Curtain Cave in Flower-Fruit Mountain, where he declared himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven and set up a pole with a banner. He said that he should convey this message to the demon kings of each cave: from now on, they are to address me only as the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, and not as ‘Great King’ anymore. Later, Tai Bai Jin Xing came up with a plan to deal with the Monkey King; he asked the Jade Emperor to issue an order to pacify the Monkey King, satisfying his desires by giving him a title that carried no actual responsibilities or benefits – the title of Great Sage Equal to Heaven. 4. The pseudonym adopted by Sanzang is “Sun Wukong”. After being rescued from the Five Elements Mountain by Tripitaka, the Monkey King saw that he truly had good intentions and was indeed a genuine monk, so he asked him what his surname was. The Monkey King replied, “I originally have a Dharma name, which is Sun Wukong.” ”Sanzang said, “With your appearance, you resemble that little monk; I’ll give you another nickname and call you ‘the Pilgrim.’” ”From then on, he was once again called Sun Wukong.
