What is the sequence of hydrostatic testing for the tube side and shell side in floating-head heat exchangers? Why is it different from the hydrostatic testing sequence for heat exchangers with fixed tube sheets? Additionally, how are weld joints tested?
Floating-head heat exchanger – the tube side is processed first, at this point the large cover has not yet been installed. But once there is a leak, it is necessary to first perform pressure testing on the shell side using a fake hood in order to determine which tube bundle is faulty. Fixed tube sheet – first test the shell side to check whether each tube bank is leaking.
