At the site, we are using Honeywell’s portable combustible gas detector, which can measure 4 values: oxygen concentration, carbon monoxide concentration, hydrogen sulfide concentration, and combustible gas concentration. My question is: Does the concentration of \"combustible gas\" measured by the explosion detector refer to the concentration of natural gas (i.e., a mixture of hydrocarbons such as methane and ethane)? Or does it merely indicate the methane concentration? If it measures methane concentration, can this explosion detector still be used to detect acetylene leaks? If it represents the concentration of a mixture (and any hydrocarbon will do), then can it be used to measure acetylene leaks as well?
It should be a mixture, because many different gases can be measured!
The specifications for several of our fixed-on-site combustible gas detectors only mention “combustible gases,” and the measurement principle is “catalytic combustion type.” I still don’t understand it.

If it’s a mixed gas, then can it be measured as long as it contains flammable gases? For example, acetylene and hydrogen – in such cases, there’s no need to use specialized explosion detectors for hydrogen or acetylene

I just don’t know what the principle behind this portable combustible gas detector is; it seems to me that it measures methane: lol
The catalytic combustion type is generally used; it can measure any flammable gas, and what is measured is a mixed gas. As for acetylene, there are specialized alarms for it~~
I did some research on my own: Portable combustible gas detectors are usually the catalytic combustion type of detectors you mentioned. They measure the concentration of combustible gases based on the heat generated by their combustion, and they are typically calibrated using methane as a reference. Therefore, if such detectors are to be used to measure the concentration of other combustible gases (such as hydrogen, ethane, etc.), it is necessary to apply the corresponding correction factors. Since the main component of natural gas is methane, the value read by the explosion detector is approximately equal to the concentration of natural gas.
Fixed and portable combustible gas detectors include catalytic combustion type explosive detectors, which measure combustible gases by converting the heat generated by their combustion into electrical signals; these detectors are usually calibrated using methane.
I’ve read that these catalytic combustion-type portable explosive detectors are generally used to measure the lower explosive limit, or LEL. If the concentration is too high, it can damage the sensing elements. We have on-site a portable combustible gas detector that uses a pump to draw in air samples; it’s capable of measuring high concentrations of combustible gases. What is the principle behind this type of combustible gas detector?
