The differences between 304, 304SS, 316, 316SS, 316L, and 316LSS
SS stands for stainless steel; don’t you know that?
S30408 is 0cr18ni9; it is commonly abbreviated as 304SS. Its design temperature can reach 700 degrees. 304L is equivalent to S30403; its steel grade is 00Cr19Ni10, and it can withstand temperatures up to 450 degrees. S31608 is 0cr1712mo2; it is commonly abbreviated as 316SS. Its design temperature can reach 700 degrees. 316L is equivalent to S31603; its steel grade is 00Cr17Ni12Mo2, and it can withstand temperatures up to 450 degrees.
Lowercase ‘ss’ refers to stainless steel; I’m using uppercase now. The two are not the same thing
Do you think there’s a difference? Perhaps my knowledge is limited; you should look up the standards on your own. 304SS is just a common name, and each material has its own specific grade designation.
304, 316L, 316 are all the American standard designations; however, there is no suffix like SS. The difference between 316L and 316 is that 316L has a lower carbon content. All of the above are austenitic stainless steels.
Both the 304 and 316 series are Ni-Cr austenitic stainless steels; the 316 series contains Mo in addition to 304, giving it better corrosion resistance. L-grade materials have lower carbon content than non-L-grade materials and possess slightly better mechanical properties; in simple terms, they are upgraded versions.
