There are many process media that are mixtures composed of various compounds, and parameters such as the flash point and explosion limits of these medium components are well defined. How can one determine the fire hazard level of such combustible mixtures, so as to avoid excessive impacts on equipment layout and configuration? I’m facing a few situations at the moment and would appreciate it if someone with expertise could help clarify them: 1. If a medium consists of flammable gas components of Category A and Category B, with a low concentration of Category A gases and a high concentration of Category B gases, should such a medium be classified as a Category A flammable gas or a Category B one? 2. The gas medium consists of flammable and non-flammable gases, with a small amount of flammable components present. How can one determine whether the medium should be classified as a flammable gas, and how should the fire hazard category be determined? 3. The liquid medium consists of flammable and non-flammable liquids, with a small amount of flammable components present. How can one determine whether the medium should be classified as a flammable liquid, and how should the fire hazard category be determined? Generally, it is classified according to the level of danger; unless the specifications specify a small amount – indicating just how little is considered low-level.
At present, it is difficult to classify situations where there is a small amount of flammable material in the medium; if a higher classification is assigned, the costs increase significantly, while if a lower classification is used, it may not meet the acceptance criteria of certain departments.
I have the same question: for different combustible media in the same area, the higher standard applies rather than the lower one, but I have not encountered this situation with mixed media
