"\"Activated clay\" is something that laypeople may rarely come into contact with, or may not even have heard of. Clay is an active substance with strong adsorption properties. White clay, also known as kaolin or activated white clay. It can be used for the decolorization of oils and the absorption of moisture, and it can also be employed in the cable industry as a filler to increase resistance and reduce costs.
White clay is a grayish-white granular powder with a large specific surface area and pore volume; it possesses special adsorption capabilities and ion exchange properties, as well as strong decolorization abilities and activity, with good stability after decolorization. It is mainly used in the petroleum industry, and can adsorb unstable substances and colored substances such as unsaturated hydrocarbons, sulfides, resins, and asphaltenes found in petroleum-based minerals like paraffin and lubricating oils. Generally, bentonite usually refers to activated bentonite and acidic bentonite. Activated clay is an adsorbent made from clay (mainly bentonite) as raw material, through inorganic acid treatment, followed by water washing and drying. It appears as a milky white powder, is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic, and possesses strong adsorption properties, enabling it to absorb colored substances and organic materials. It absorbs moisture easily in air, and its adsorption capacity decreases if left for too long. However, when heated to above 300 degrees Celsius, it begins to lose its crystalline water, causing changes in its structure and affecting the fading effect. Activated clay is insoluble in water, organic solvents, and various oils; it is almost completely soluble in hot caustic soda and acid salts. Its relative density is 2.3–2.5, and it swells very little in water and oil.
