I’m just starting to work in the chemical industry, and I’m not yet very familiar with some of the basic concepts related to refining. I’d like to know what the differences are between stripping, gas stripping, and extraction. I hope everyone can help explain this to me – thank you!

Stripping generally refers to the method of using steam to remove certain impurity components from oils; these impurities are usually soluble in water. Additionally, stripping also has a distillation effect, which helps to separate the lighter components of the material. For example, hydrogenation is applied to gasoline and diesel, after which hydrogen sulfide is removed by stripping. Gas stripping uses a gas other than water vapor as the extraction medium; its process is different from steam stripping. In steam stripping, separation is achieved by the condensation of water vapor into water, whereas in gas stripping, separation occurs directly between gas and liquid. This separation process is highly dependent on pressure, and such operations are generally not carried out at high pressures. The concept of extraction refers to liquid-liquid extraction, which is a separation process based on the different solubilities of the components to be separated in various media, such as butadiene extraction and aromatic hydrocarbon extraction.
